Hundreds of people working in the city centre were evacuated this morning after a gas leak in Queens Square.
DV8 College and Domestic and General are both affected by the leak, which happened at 9am this morning on the building site of the new hotel on the former ice rink.
Gas engineers arrived on site soon afterwards and several buildings were evacuated at about 10.15am.
The evacuation was lifted shortly before midday, while work continued to the gas main.
DV8 tweeted this morning: “The Dv8 Brighton campus and surrounding buildings have been evacuated due to a gas leak on Queens Square. We’re not sure when we’ll be allowed back in but will be sure to keep you updated.”
A spokesman for Domestic and General said about 500 of its staff were evacuated.
A spokeswoman for SGN said: “We have been making emergency repairs this morning due to third party damage to our gas main. We evacuated an office block and a few other buildings to make the area safe.
“We have now completed repairs and are in the process of reoccupying the evacuated buildings.”
