A Brighton couple are behind bars after being convicted of robbing a Brazilian student in a Hove street.
Mark Mitchell, 31, of New Steine, and Gemma Godfrey, 27, of Dewe Road, were jailed by a judge at Lewes Crown Court on Monday (15 August) after a five-day trial.
Mitchell was sentenced to five years and Godfrey to four years.
They robbed their 20-year-old victim, who was living in Hove, as he was walking along Farm Road just after midnight on Tuesday 21 April.
Mitchell and Godfrey confronted him and Mitchell threatened him with a knife.
They stole £20 from him and ran off.
The student flagged down a passing taxi driver who called the police.
Officers started to search the area and minutes later they stopped the dodgy duo in Western Road.
Detective Inspector Jason Tingley, of Sussex Police, said: “These were substantial sentences and reflect the seriousness with which the courts regard this type of crime.
“The CPS prosecutor also complimented the arresting officers on their quick response and Detective Constable Rowan Carter for her management of the subsequent investigation and preparation of the case for court.”
