Over the past three days, music fans and delegates from right across the world have descended in their many thousands to the city of Brighton & Hove. They arrived to take in the numerous joys on offer as part of The Great Escape new music festival.
Now in it’s fourteenth consecutive year, The Great Escape along with its sister the Alternative Escape, has seen a multitude of more than 600+ musical artists perform within the boundaries of Brighton. Music could be heard emanating from almost every concert venue and club from noon to midnight and in some cases well into the early hours. Bars, coffee houses and even ecclesiastical buildings were also offering music to further supplement the punters choices. There were even secret and surprise concerts going on as well as unofficial music events at the same time.
Brighton is always a vibrant city, but even more so on Thursday 9th, Friday 10th and Saturday 11th May as The Great Escape team had once again successfully catered for virtually every musical taste, whether your preference is pop, grime, indie, country, metal, acoustic, soul, jazz or punk, you would have found something right up your street.
Many acts have performed at previous Great Escapes prior to becoming famous, with the most noteworthy being Adele in 2007 and Ed Sheeran in 2011. Other artists that have gone on to bigger and better things after appearing at The Great Escape include The Kooks (2006), The Wombats (2008), Mumford & Sons (2009), Ellie Goulding (2010), Grimes (2012), Christine & The Queens (2013), Charli XCX (2014), Rag ‘n’ Bone Man (2015), Stormzy (2016), Slaves (2017), and IDLES (2018).
Once again this year, The Great Escape had brought bands from all over the planet to our city. Avid music goers were able to witness the mainly thirty minute showcase performances from up-and-coming artists from the UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia, USA, Norway, Italy, Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, Palestine, France, Austria, Portugal, Sweden, and South Korea to name just a few!
The influx of musical artists and their entourage of associated personnel including managers, PR representatives and crew, as well as the accompanying fans, is undoubtedly welcome news for the economy of Brighton. Bars, restaurants, takeaways, hotels, shops and car parks must be very pleased as a result of this new music festival.
The Brighton & Hove News music team were once again in attendance this year and we are currently sifting through in excess of 10,000 photographs and collating our reviews on the many artists that we witnessed during this most enjoyable event. Keep an eye out for our reports on these events over the coming days and weeks.
