Before United added a second, Glenn Murray had a super chance to pull the Seagulls level but didn’t catch his effort cleanly when well placed.
Marcus Rashford doubled the home side’s lead three minutes before half time.
Lewis Dunk had a chance to score for Albion before Davy Propper combined well with Gross who put Albion back in it with 18 minutes to go.
Neither team had a clear-cut chance to score again and Albion stay 13th in the Premier League.

Three days later – on Tuesday 29 January – Brighton return to Premier League action when they travel to Craven Cottage to face relegation-threatened Fulham who are second from bottom.
