Three halls of residence are likely to be built on the Sussex University campus in Falmer.
Plans for the 180 student bedrooms were approved by Brighton and Hove City Council Planning Committee this week.
There were concerns because part of the Northfield site falls within the borders of the South Downs National Park and within Stanmer Park and Gardens.
None of the buildings though are to be built within the national par borders.
The Northfield site is next to the Lewes Court halls of residence.
A report to councillors said that additional student housing was required within the city.
It also said that the development would have a negligible impact on the South Downs National Park and would preserve strategic views and the character of the surrounding area.
