Saltdean Lido held it’s first Christmas Day swim in the pool’s 80-year history today.
More than 150 swimmers, wearing Santa hats, joined festive customers at the Lido and took the plunge at the sell-out event.
Saltdean Lido CIC volunteer Deryck Chester said: “We hope this to be the start of a new tradition at Saltdean Lido.
“Many people have been asking us for a while to host a swim on Christmas Day and this year we thought why not?
“It’s proved a fantastic success. Everyone’s been in a jolly mood – it’s a great atmosphere.
“It’s such a silly and British thing to go swimming on Christmas Day and Saltdean Lido’s beautiful building provides the perfect setting.
“When the building is fully restored we hope to have lots more of these kind of events.”
One couple, Mark and Christine, cycled to the Lido from Kemp Town this morning and said: “It’s such a fun way to start your Christmas Day.
“We cycled into a sunrise and we heard the laughter from the pool as soon soon as we reached the tunnel. We’d definitely do it again.”
