The new Mayor of Brighton and Hove will get a week of safety activities under way at a Brighton primary school when the half-term break is over.
Councillor Anne Meadows will encourage children at Carden Primary School in Hollingbury to prepare for Child Safety Week.
She is due to visit the school on Monday 6 June when Year 6 pupils will start lessons in fire and accident prevention.
Child Safety Week runs from Monday 20 June and is being supported locally by the mayor and by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.
The fire service, Brighton and Hove City Council Trading Standards and the local Education Partnership are all supporting Child Safety Week.
East Sussex Fire and Rescue said: “Preventable accidents are one of the biggest killers in the UK, and the message coming loud and clear this week is that a few moments’ extra thought can make all the difference.
“Simple checks like checking candles and matches are out of reach, or a quick glance down the hall to ensure an escape route is clear in case of a fire, take just seconds but can save lives.”
The organisations taking part hope to reach 500 Year 6 pupils in Brighton and Hove during Child Safety Week.
