Anyone living near a council tip will soon get used to a fruitier than normal atmosphere – but something in the air this morning prompted a series of complaints to Brighton and Hove City Council about the Hollingdean tip.
The city council’s @RefuseRecycling Twitter account tweeted earlier today: “Morning, we have had a few reports of the Veolia site being a bit smelly today. Our contact centre have called Veolia and they will do what they can to reduce the smell.”
The tweet has since been deleted, but Brighton and Hove News understands that the council contact centre received about four complaints about the whiff, which was caused by recycling not being washed out properly.
A council spokesperson said: “We always work closely with Veolia to ensure the city’s waste is managed in a way that has minimal impact on residents.”
Evdn the Environment Agency agree with us local residents that the regular stink is caused by food waste being held in an inappropriate building at Hollingdean. It can’t be blamed on residents not rinsing recycling! They need to get collecting food waste separately.
