A paperboy who was knocked over by a car in Hove on Friday has died.
Declan Hubert, 14, of Hangleton Manor Close, Hangleton, was hit as he crossed Hangleton Road while on his paper round shortly before 8am on Friday (6 May).
He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton with head injuries and transferred to Hurstwood Park Neurosciences Centre in Haywards Heath.
Family and friends gathered at Hurstwood Park on Sunday evening where his parents Jeremy and Caroline Hubert made the decision to switch off his life-supporting ventilator.
Doctors had told them that their son would never recover.
He died shortly afterwards.
Mr and Mrs Hubert said: “We are amazed and greatly encouraged by the overwhelming support of the community in Brighton and of people’s prayers and their best wishes.
“We have had an absolute avalanche of contact from people saying they are praying for us from people across the world.
“Declan was a wonderful gentle boy who had a strong faith in God.
“He was a gifted guitarist and he enjoyed his friends and was loved by his family.
“He showed great respect for authority and was often described by his teachers as a very polite young man.
“Yes, we have suffered a great loss and many tears have been shed, but we have absolute confidence that Declan is now in a very happy place with his Lord and saviour Jesus in Heaven.”
It has been reported that Declan, who was delivering papers for the Safegate newsagent in Hangleton Way, was listening to music on his headphones and had his hood up when the accident happened.
Sussex Police traffic officers are investigating the collision and asked any witnesses to contact them on 0845 6070999.
