Railings and shelters along Brighton and Hove’s famous seafront are to get a £500,000 facelift from the Marina to Hove Lagoon.
Brighton and Hove City Council is taking inspiration from the restoration of the Brighton Bandstand to improve what it calls the city’s “shop window”.
However, while the restoration of the bandstand has been popular, with varied uses made of the rejuvenated landmark, the quality of the work itself has been called into question.
The council has set aside £500,000 for the work on the rest of the seafront, with £100,000 allocated for ongoing maintenance this year and every year afterwards.
Council leader Mary Mears said: “The seafront in Brighton and Hove is our shop window to the world, shown on TV footage and in images across the globe.
“We want it to give the best possible impression of our city and believe that this investment now will reap the benefits for years to come.
“The seafront is fundamental in attracting the high number of visitors to the city.
“Over eight million people came last year, all who enjoy the high standards of care we take of our city and its seafront.”
The proposed budget will be debated at a meeting of the full council on Thursday 25 February 2010.
