Some MPs indulge in gutter politics but Green Party leader Caroline Lucas has piped up with a contribution that could more accurately be described as the politics of the sewer.
Ms Lucas, the MP for Brighton Pavilion, took a tour of the town’s Victorian sewers on Monday (18 April).
The hour-long tour – a popular tourist attraction – prompted Ms Lucas to say: “I was really pleased to be invited by Southern Water to take a look at the world that lies underneath Brighton – and to learn more about the crucial role the sewer system plays in keeping our city clean.
“Being more aware of what happens to our waste and finding out how problematic it is, for example, when used fat and grease from cooking is washed down the sink should really make us think again.
“It might seem an unlikely tourist attraction, but the Victorian sewer tour has succeeded in establishing itself as an important tribute to our underground heritage – and to the brilliant feats of civil engineering achieved by previous generations.”
The tours, which have to be booked in advance, start by the Palace Pier and end when those taking part emerge through a manhole in the middle of the Old Steine Gardens.
They cost £12 for adults, £8.50 for students and over 65s, and £6 for 11 to 16-year-olds.
