Traders to add planters to busy shopping street thanks to donation

Traders and volunteers are getting together to add more planters to a busy shopping street thanks to a donation from a local businessman.

They are holding a second planting day in Boundary Road and Station Road, on the border of Hove and Portslade, to brighten up the area.

The gardening session is due to run from 10am to noon on Saturday 24 February.

Volunteers will prepare five new planters for the busy shopping street’s pavements.

The purchase of the planters was made possible thanks to a £1,000 donation from local businessman Reis Emre, of PGMI Portslade Ltd, the owner of Portslade Brewery in the Old Village.

The initiative to bring plants to Boundary Road was started in 2015 as the Blooming Boundary Campaign by local residents Karen Young, Patsy Perrousset, Councillor Robert Nemeth and Councillor Garry Peltzer Dunn.

Donations and goods worth more than £6,000 have come from traders and residents, including plants from Mayberry Garden Centre and soil from Brighton and Hove City Council.

The five new planters join the 16 that are already in place. Volunteers will be moving planters into position, after a spell in storage at Little Doggy Daycare, in Vale Road.

They will be filled with soil using wheelbarrows from the Secret Garden Group and transport by Acre Landscapes.

Plants come courtesy of the Railway Inn, Ingram Crescent Residents Association and several local residents.

And the original planters will be cleaned and cleared of any litter.

Councillor Nemeth said: “This fabulous initiative has only been possible through the generosity of users of Boundary Road and Station Road who just want to see their local high street improved.

“Our last planting session was incredibly well attended and we hope that this one will be too.

“Reis Emre has been a huge supporter of the Blooming Boundary Campaign since its inception and his donation has made the second phase a reality. We are all very grateful indeed.

“There is no need to register in advance for Saturday. Just turn up outside Tesco, who will be supplying refreshments again, from 10am.”
