Chelsea 2 Brighton & Hove Albion 0
Albion held Chelsea to a first-half draw as the teams met competitively for the first time since 1989.
But just under a minute after the restart Albion were chasing the game after going behind.
Goals from Alvaro Morata and Marcos Alonso saw Chelsea unsurprisingly take all three points.
Both goals came from headers.
The ball went in for the second – on the hour – after Maty Ryan had twice kept Alonso at bay in quick succession.
The result was Albion’s fourth away defeat on the trot and all without a goal for the Seagulls.
Albion stay 12th in the table and next take on Newcastle at St James Park on Saturday 30 December.
