A 50-year-old woman has admitted spewing a torrent of racist abuse in a tirade outside Churchill Square shopping centre in Brighton.
Jane Gordon, of Finchdean Road, Havant, ranted at an innocent passer-by, Mari Quashie, outside the Prince of Wales pub in Clarence Square.
The passer-by had stepped in because she was concerned about a child, Brighton Magistrates’ Court was told.
But Gordon denied a charge of neglecting the child and assaulting a police community support officer Darren Farrant. He suffered a scratched arm.
It was suggested that Gordon was drunk and picked up a chair but she denied throwing it during the fracas on 29 October.
The court was told that she had had a drink but was not drunk.
She had started new medication and suffered from mental health problems.
A video of Gordon’s vile rant went viral on the internet.
When she was charged, Sussex Police said: “Public order offences, including racial abuse, will not be tolerated by Sussex Police and offenders will be dealt with robustly.
“Anyone who is a victim or a witness to such behaviour is encouraged to report it online.”
The case was adjourned until Monday 15 January. Gordon was bailed.
