The double junction at Union Road, Elm Grove and Lewes Road will be closed for up to five nights from Monday as workmen finish changes to the road layout.
Since the end of August, Brighton and Hove City Council has been changing junction layouts to prevent traffic queuing at red lights from obstructing vehicles trying to pass green.
Other changes seek to improve the pedestrian and cycle route between Lewes Road, Elm Grove and the Level, where cyclists tend to use pavements to avoid difficult turning movements.
The final phase entails new road surfacing and markings. To enable this, certain junctions will be closed between 8pm and 5.30am. Dates and locations are:
Nights of Monday and Tuesday – no entry or exit between Lewes Road and Union Road.
Nights of Wednesday Thursday – no entry or exit between Lewes Road and Elm Grove.
It is hoped no works will actually be needed on Friday, but the date will be used if bad weather causes an overrun.
Signed diversions will be in place and drivers urged to find alternative routes. Pedestrian routes will be maintained at all times. Bus journeys could be affected after 8pm and passengers should check with operators.
A letter has been sent to residents and businesses in the area, warning of the works.
