Part of the Old Steine has been cordoned off this evening as firefighters tackle a blaze, believed to be at the former Vavoom bar.
Smoke has been seen billowing out of the bar, which had been renamed the Bloc members club until that too closed in July.
The fire service was called shortly before 10pm, and at least four engines were sent to the scene. A witness said he saw firefighters climbing over the railing above the bar.
Residents said the road was closed but they had not been asked to evacuate. Buses had to be diverted to avoid the incident. By 11pm, the road had reopened again.
My whole road is closed for fire and police. Smoke in a building at the end of the street. No evacuation yet. #brighton pic.twitter.com/ShKf6GdRj5

Some reports on social media said the fire was at Revenge, but it appears that is unaffected.
Brighton and Hove News has not been able to reach the fire service or police for comment.
