The main train operating company serving Brighton, Hove and Portslade has won a national award for “integrated transport”.
Southern picked up the award for Integrated Transport Excellence at the Rail Business Awards on Thursday night (17 February).
It was also a finalist in nine other categories and in six of those categories it was highly commended.
The integrated transport award was for the best contribution over the past year to improving integration between the railways and other forms of transport.
Examples of Southern’s approach included the creation of more than 1,500 extra cycle parking spaces at stations and 1,100 extra car parking spaces.
Southern also added more screens giving details of the next bus as well as those already showing the times of the next train.
Its PlusBus ticketing scheme allows passengers to buy one ticket covering the train and bus.
And the train operator has also been spending more than £300,000 a year making stations easier to use for passengers with disabilities.
Southern’s managing director Chris Burchell said: “I’m delighted that the hard work our staff have invested in integrated transport solutions has been recognised in this way.
“We’re putting a lot of time, effort and money into making our network and train service more accessible and more integrated with other forms of transport than ever before.
“To be finalists in ten categories is a fantastic achievement but, at the end of the day, it’s our passengers who benefit most from all the initiatives we have put in place.”
