Brighton coach crash driver questioned as girl, 6, is treated in hospital

Police have questioned the driver of a coach which hit a mother and daughter in Brighton yesterday morning (Thursday 29 June).

The daughter, a six-year-old girl who goes to St Bartholomew’s Church of England Primary School, in Brighton, suffered serious injuries to one of her feet and was taken to hospital.

She is expected to need more treatment for some time to come – and specialist staff have been ready to offer support to her shocked school friends.

Her mother was unhurt in the accident which happened at about 9am in Marlborough Place, near the King and Queen pub, the bottom of North Road and the Mazda Fountain.

St Bartholomew’s head teacher Katie Blood said: “Our whole school community has been shocked and deeply saddened by this incident.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the child and the family at this very difficult time. Specialist staff have been in offering counselling and other support for our whole school community.”

Sussex Police said: “The girl sustained serious injuries which are potentially life-changing but not life-threatening. She remains in hospital.”

The driver has been interviewed, Sussex Police said. But no one has been arrested and the investigation continues.

The force said yesterday: “Alternative transport was arranged for the occupants of the coach which was being used for a school trip. No one on the coach was injured.

“Anyone who saw what happened is asked to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or phone 101, quoting Operation Wilderness.”
