Stephen Paul Edwards was remanded in custody today (Tuesday 8 February) after appearing at Brighton Magistrates’ Court charged with rape.
Edwards, 46, of Merevale in Hollingdean, was charged with the rape of Pauline Jenkins after she was found dead at her home in Rosebery Avenue, Woodingdean, on Saturday 5 February.
Sussex Police said that post-mortem tests “found that she suffered from injuries consistent with rape”.
Edwards is due to appear again on Monday 18 April at the same court.
Detectives are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the mother of three’s death, including whether she was murdered.
Detective Chief Inspector Nick Sloan, of the Sussex Police Major Crime Branch, said: “I would appeal for anyone who has had contact with Mr Edwards to speak to police to help us build up a picture of his life.
“You may have had contact with him because you are a friend, family member or you have met Mr Edwards in a social capacity, either face to face or over the internet.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 6070999.
