A Labour MP has called for a diplomatic solution to prevent further holiday home owners suffering the same fate as a Hove couple.
Celia Barlow, MP for Hove, spoke out after the Court of Appeal in London upheld a European ruling that the couple should demolish their home in Northern Cyprus.
They must also pay damages to the dispossessed owner of the land and they face a seven-figure legal bill even though they bought the land in good faith.
Mrs Barlow said: “I am deeply sorry to hear that my constituents David and Linda Orams have lost their case.
“They first contacted me at the end of 2007 and we have done our best outside of the courts to help save them from the punitive judgment of the European Court of Justice, holding meetings with Government Ministers and the then Special Envoy to Cyprus, Joan Ryan MP.
“I have already had a brief meeting with her and she said that this ruling has huge implications.
“I hope that in the wider framework, current diplomacy will lead to a solution between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, but the impact on my constituents, the Orams, is devastating.”
