The clock is ticking for the murals lining Kensington Street, as barriers are put up across the bays they overlook in readiness for new homes to be built.
The sites have been earmarked for housing for several years now, but it was only last November that Brighton and Hove City Council gave permission for 12 homes to be built on the former parking spaces.
The council is building nine flats and three houses on what were once parking spaces for Argus staff when the newspaper was known as the Evening Argus.
Although building work is not expected to start for a few months yet, the barriers were put up this month while work to test the ground gets under way.
A council spokeswoman said: “Building work is expected to start in early summer. However, the site has been cordoned off as a range of ground tests are being carried out.”
When permission was granted in November, councillors were told the murals would be recorded for posterity, acknowledging they have become a tourist attraction in their own right.
OH NO, what a loss. This definitely is a tourist attraction. Although I’m not in Brighton at present, I have lived there for over 50 years and still am a frequent visitor home. I always love walking along here to admire the colourful art work. It certainly brightens up Brighton.
“Affordable” okay lets see this affordable project …
Like the affordable flats on the Marina or Hove Park ..
Sinful. Barbaric. Hideous. How had this been allowed. 12 houses crammed into a few parking spaces. Starting early summer, ubsuprisinly in the busiest area of town. Obsurd. Brighton council have lost the plot completely. Stop selling out!
Affordable for who? So many housing co ops in Brighton in need of land… Or what about a shelter for people on the streets? Love the artwork too!
