Glam rockers Slade have had to cancel their gigs for the next few months after guitarist Dave Hill suffered a broken elbow when he collided with a cyclist in Brighton.
The 70-year-old was staying at the Grand hotel when he was hit just before Christmas and had to go to the Royal Sussex County Hospital where his arm was put in plaster.
The band’s agent Abbie Carter said: “Unfortunately, shows due to take place in January and February 2017 have had to be cancelled.
“Dave Hill, lead guitarist, has fractured his elbow after he collided with a cyclist while out walking in Brighton on (Friday) 23 December.”
The accident happened the day after Slade’s final gig of the year – a sell-out performance at the Concorde 2 on Brighton seafront.
Hill was one of the founder members of the band, which had hits in the 1970s with Merry Xmas Everybody, Coz I Love You, Mama Weer All Crazee Now, GudBye To Jane, Cum on Feel The Noize and Far Far Away.
Hill recently published his autobiography.
No suprise that a cyclist has caused an accidentin Brighton and Hove. Many cyclists now routinely ride on the pavement and ignore red traffic lights.
Could be Dave was walking on or walked onto the Cycle Lane on the seafront while not looking. So many pedestrians do that also.
keep cyclist on the road, and away from pedestrians.
The bands publicist phrased it correctly, why did you turn it into a cyclist demonising headline? Do you know the details of the collision? Could Mr Hill have stepped ionto cycle path without looking?
Fair point, Keith. I hadn’t intended to suggest fault on either the cyclist’s part of Dave Hill’s so I’ve modified the headline.
My husband and I (aged over 70yrs) regularly visit Brighton 2/3 times a year. We love to walk along the promenade, but we do think it is dangerous, you need to have your wits about you, as a lot of ‘keep fit’ cyclists ‘bomb’ along at mega miles an hour, not giving sightseeing pedestrians much chance if they stray into the cyclist lane. It’s a similar problem with the Under Cliffs Walk to Rottingdean especially with a dog and a toddler, nightmare.
There are plenty of “GIVE WAY” signs on the seafront cycle lane. Unfortunately most cyclists ignore them and hurtle through without due care for others.
The give way markings only apply for cyclists entering the cycle lane from the crossing. If a cyclist is entering the cycle lane from the crossing you should give way, as the markings suggest. They do not apply to giving way to pedestrians. ‘Give way’ markings only apply to vehicles to give way to other vehicles.
Well that’s disingenuous. How the hell are you supposed to phantom that.’ Give way’ should mean don’t run people over….
….fathom
What a shame for Mr Hill, I wish him a speedy recovery.
All road users need to drive with care and attention, even so, we human beings are fallible. Applying speed limits would be a start though.
To many cyclists to many joggers and to many pedestrian . I am a brightonian and go to the seafront a lot, not the best place to have a bike lane , in such a busy seafront , I find it a high risk of being knocked down , Dave hill will not be the last person going to a&he
