Firefighters are offering to take away unwanted Christmas trees for a fiver to raise money for a life-changing operation for an eight-year-old boy.
The crew members from Hove Fire Station will spend Saturday 7 January on their fundraising drive on behalf of a local schoolboy called Oliver Sharman.
Oliver has cerebral palsy and hopes to have an operation to help him to walk again.
Station Manager Scott Saunders said: “There is no cure for cerebral palsy but Oliver has been offered hope by Great Ormond Street Children Hospital as he is a good candidate for the life-changing operation called selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR).
“Unfortunately, this procedure is not funded by the NHS nor is all the post-operation physiotherapy, required for the next couple of years.
“The bill from Great Ormond Street Hospital is £27,000 and the cost of rehabilitation related to SDR is £10,000 per year.”
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “If you would like to do your bit for charity and get that unwanted festive tree out of your home on Saturday 7 January, just text Scott on 07876 133672.”
