A suspected unexploded shell led to the closure of a busy Brighton road today (Friday 16 December) and the evacuation of neighbouring homes.
Hollingdean Road, which runs between the Vogue Gyratory and Ditchling Road, was closed for about five hours before bomb disposal experts declared the “shell” safe.
Sussex Police said: “An EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) unit attended a building site near the Brighton to Lewes railway line off Hollingdean Road where a suspected unexploded shell was found just after 11am.
“A number of people were evacuated from premises in the immediate vicinity but, on attendance, EOD examined the item and advised that it wasn’t a threat.
“The cordon was removed and people returned to their premises around 4pm.”
The suspected shell turned out to have been a waste container.
Earlier St James’s Street was closed for about an hour from about 12.30pm after two people fell over on a bus. One was taken to hospital for treatment.
There’s a bomb… PS 2 people fell over!
