Scaffolding is down, a race is cancelled and wind speeds of 97mph have been reported in the channel just south of Brighton overnight as Storm Angus rages along the south coast.
The Brooks Brighton 10k race has been cancelled for safety reasons, John Street is closed because of issues with the police station reportedly affecting the roof, and the BBC has published images of scaffolding down in Brighton crushing a car.
An amber be prepared warning for wind is still in place over the south coast, including Brighton and Hove, until 11am, and the Met said at 6.35am that although most of the rain has now passed, winds are expected to strengthen in the coming hours.
At 9am, it said: “Storm Angus was centred over Essex at 8am and will continue to move away quickly eastwards this morning. The strongest of the winds are now over the Strait of Dover and although some strong gusts are still evident further north and west, these will ease through the morning and early afternoon.
“Remaining heavy rain over East Anglia will soon clear, although some roads may still be affected by surface water flooding after the earlier heavy rain.”
At 9am, a police spokeswoman said that the only ongoing incident in Brighton was in John Street. She saidL “We have got a lot of damage everywhere in Sussex with trees down etc.”
Speed restrictions and cancellations are in place on the railways. Network Rail said: “Speed restrictions are in place on routes south of Three Bridges. Delays of up to 45 minutes can be expected during the morning as trains have to run more slowly than usual.
“Some cancellations may also be necessary in order to prevent congestion from building.
“Most Southeastern trains will not run before 10:00 to allow Network Rail to make sure the tracks are clear. Gatwick Express have no service today as there will be planned engineering works. You can use Southern between London and Gatwick Airport.”
Posting on its Facebook page, the Brooks 10k race’s organisers said: “Due to the strong winds meaning that we cannot close the roads along the seafront, we have been advised that the 10k race cannot go ahead – we are very sorry to have to make this announcement but feel it is safer for all and we had no option.”
