Brighton charity Maternity Worldwide is appealing for people to donate bicycles, baby clothes and torches to help fill a shipping container bound for Malawi.
Maternity Worldwide saves lives in childbirth in sub-Saharan Africa; they currently have three maternal healthcare programmes in Malawi, Uganda and Ethiopia helping mothers to give birth safely with the skilled care they need.
Shipping company Maersk havs generously donated a 40 foot shipping container to go to Malawi which leaves Brighton on Thursday, 30 June. The charity has therefore launched an urgent appeal for to make sure every inch of the container can be put to good use.
Brighton doctor Adrian Brown, who founded the charity in 2002, said: “As well as equipment, medical supplies and textbooks, we are seeking second-hand (functional) bicycles to enable midwives to access pregnant women in remote and rural villages, newborn baby clothes, blankets and many other essentials such as rechargeable torches, floodlights and batteries to enable the health centres to still safely function and deliver babies during power cuts.”
An Amazon wish list has been created where people can purchase items to donate which are then delivered directly to the charity and there is a list of other things needed (new or second-hand) on its website.
Donated items need to arrive by 29 June in order for them to be packaged ready for collection the following day.
If you are able to help with donations of any kind please get in touch with Maternity Worldwide on 01273 234033 or email fundraising@maternityworldwide.org.
Items can be delivered to: Maternity Worldwide, Community Base, 113 Queens Road, Brighton, BN1 3XG Monday to Friday between 8.30am- 4.30pm.
