Fire authority for Brighton and Hove puts up council tax by just under 2 per cent

Parts of Portslade were affected by flash floods this afternoon (Tuesday 7 June).

Fire crews were called out to a number of properties in less than an hour after thunder and lightning and a sudden heavy downpour.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “The Met Office has issued a yellow warning, due to outbreaks of heavy localised showers, meaning that severe weather is possible through until tomorrow morning (Wednesday 8 June) and that you should plan ahead, thinking about possible travel delays, or possible disruption.

“Members of the public are asked to take extra care during storms and it is important to remember not to drive through deep water, which could result in becoming stranded.”

The calls this afternoon included

  • At 1.08pm Hove firefighters were mobilised to Drove Road, Portslade, following reports of flooding.
  • At 1.23pm Hove firefighters were sent to South Street, Portslade, after reports of flooding.
  • At 1.30pm Hove firefighters were called upon to assist at the scene of flooding in Valley Road, Portslade.
  • At 1.50pm Hove firefighters assisted a van trapped in water in Mile Oak, Portslade.

Just before 1pm Roedean firefighters were alerted to a fire in the open at Whitehawk after a lightning strike. But, the fire service said, “this transpired to be a false alarm.”
