The A27 was closed eastbound between Brighton and Lewes as the evening rush hour was about to start after a van hit a pedestrian this afternoon (Tuesday 19 April).
Thousands of football fans were expected to add to the weight of traffic as Brighton and Hove Albion are scheduled to play Queen’s Park Rangers at the Amex Stadium kicking off at 7.45pm.
Sussex Police said: “Emergency services have been called to a collision involving a van and a pedestrian on the A27 eastbound Lewes at 4.10pm.
“Lane one eastbound on the A27 towards the Kingston roundabout by the petrol station is currently closed. This is causing heavy delays in the areas.
“The pedestrian, a man, is being treated by paramedics. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.”
Sussex Police said that the road was fully reopened at about 6.30pm although there were reports of heavy traffic, queues and delays.
Social media was abuzz with reports of a crash near Falmer. The road was completely closed eastbound while a helicopter landed.
Journey times from the A23 London Road at the junction of the A27 to the Falmer stadium were reported to be taking longer than an hour.
