Two men were treated for the effects of breathing in smoke after a fire at a flat in Hove in the early hours of this morning.
The fire is believed to have started as a result of smouldering cigarette ash.
It destroyed the kitchen of the first floor flat in Stirling Place, Hove.
Crews from Hove and Preston Circus fire stations were called to the blaze at about 2.15am today.
Emergency services also took the men’s pet cat to a vet.
A spokesman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue said that the pair had a smoke alarm but it did not have any batteries in it.
