Brighton may have been basking in Indian summer sunshine over the weekend – but today sees one of the first harbingers of the coming winter as tickets for the Royal Pavilion ice rink go on sale.
Organisers say if forecasts of a big freeze thanks to the El Nino weather phenomemon come true, then this year could prove a special year for skating.
Shella Parkin, CEO of Laine Ltd, creator of the rink, said: “Forecasts for the coldest winter for 50 years might be bad news for some, but could promise for a great year of skating and we hope that all our fans will come back again this year for some more fun at the most beautiful outdoor ice rink in the south east.
“If the snow really does fall, it will bring a little extra magic to the rink in its sixth year in Brighton.”
The 880m square rink opens from 10am to 10.15pm, is lit at night and includes a beginners’ area, penguin skate aids and skate sizes from toddler to adult.
An hour’s skating costs £10 for adults and £7 for the under-12s and admission to the viewing area, which features a bar and cafe, is free.
In the first hour of opening, children under five can skate for free when accompanied by a full-price paying adult. There are also season tickets for those who want to learn to skate (check website for details) and student discounts.
