The boy was taken to hospital and needed stitches to his ear after the attack at 9am on Thursday 3 September.
The attack happened near the Dyke Road and Old Shoreham Road crossroads.
The force said: “Police are appealing for witnesses after a 17-year-old boy was assaulted.
“The victim, who lives in Brighton, was put in a headlock before being punched to the ground and further assaulted.
“He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital where he required stitches to his ear.
“An 18-year-old man from Brighton was arrested on suspicion of ABH (actual bodily harm) and released on police bail until (Friday) 23 October.”
PC Ian Noakes said: “There were a number of people who would have seen the assault take place because it was close to a main road and the traffic was busy and slow moving.
“I would like to ask any witnesses to get in touch.”
