A joke in one of Alan Partridge’s most famous scenes has finally become a reality with the filming of a minute-long feature, Youth Hostelling with Chris Eubank.
The idea was touted by Steve Coogan’s best-known comic creation at a meeting with a BBC executive played by David Schneider which ended with the washed up TV presenter shoving a whole stilton in the exec’s face, shouting “Smell my cheese!”.
Youth Hostelling with Chris Eubank was one of the desperate programme ideas he pitched in the scene, first aired 18 years ago, which also included Arm Wrestling with Chas and Dave and, most famously, monkey tennis.
However, last week Chris, who holds the purchased title Lord of the Manor of Brighton, revealed he wasn’t in on the joke when he was tweeted by a London author asking him whether the programme would ever be made.
@CarlPackman Can you please explain the link between me and youth hostels?

His response asking for the link between him and youth hostels to be explained has been retweeted almost 3,500 times, and now a short film has been released on YouTube, filmed at the YHA in Old Steine, by Hostelworld, Meet the World. Chris said: “Up until recently, I had absolutely no idea why people used to mention hostels to me and smile. “It was truly an unsolved mystery to me. Youth Hostelling with Chris Eubank has now become a reality and finally, albeit a little embarrassed and ashamed, I’m in on the joke 18 years after Alan Partridge pitched it!”
It remains to be seen whether Chas and Dave will also follow suit with a spot of arm wrestling:
Spent most of today praying for a tweet from Chas and Dave asking why people keep linking them to arm wrestling. https://t.co/CZYKBPaYbD
