Three repeat offenders from Brighton and Hove have been banned from the roads again after being caught drink driving earlier this month.
John Barker, 41, was arrested at 6.45pm on Monday 1 June after he pulled out in a Renault Laguna in front of a police car.
He forced the officer at the wheel to brake sharply to avoid a crash in Holland Road, Hove.
When officers inspected Barker’s car they found that his windscreen was cracked and one of his tyres was dangerously worn. A sofa was also hanging out of the back of the car.
Checks revealed that Barker had an expired licence and that he had served three bans for drink driving.
Tests then showed that the 41-year-old had 82 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millitres of his breath – more than twice the 35 micrograms legal limit.
Barker, of Adelaide Crescent, Hove, pleaded guilty to drink driving, driving without a licence, driving without insurance and driving a vehicle in a dangerous condition.
He appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday (23 June) when he was banned from driving for 40 months, fined £220 and ordered to pay £235 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
John Darke was arrested at 2.40pm on Thursday 4 June in Lewes Road, Brighton, after officers were tipped off that he could be drink driving in his Volkswagen Caddy.
The 50-year-old had previously served two driving bans – one for drink driving and one for failing to provide a specimen for analysis.
When stopped in Brighton he had 54 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of his breath – more than one and a half times the legal limit.
Darke, of Preston Road, Brighton, pleaded guilty to drink driving when he appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court last Thursday (18 June).
He was banned from driving for 36 months, fined £110 and ordered to pay £235 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
Margaret Kelly was on her way home when she crashed her Honda Civic into a Chrysler East being driven in Valley Drive, Brighton, at 3.10pm on Tuesday 2 June.
The 70-year-old didn’t stop after the crash but instead drove home.
When officers arrived Kelly smelt of alcohol, was unsteady on her feet and was slurring her words.
She was then found to have 71 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millitres of her breath – twice the legal drink drive limit.
She had only recently completed a year-long drink driving ban after being convicted in January 2014.
Kelly, of Valley Drive, Brighton, pleaded guilty to drink driving when she appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 17 June.
She was banned from driving for three years, fined £125 and ordered to pay £235 costs and a £20 victim surcharge.
