Rescuers were unable to save the life of a 22-year-old man who went into the sea in Brighton early on Saturday morning (13 June).
The RNLI Brighton lifeboat and coastguard rescue teams brought the man ashore near Peter Pan’s Playground but he was declared dead at the scene.
An inquest is likely to be held.
The alarm was raised just after 7am by a friend of the man who died, saying that he had lost sight of him. He had gone into the sea near the Palace Pier.
Lifeboat crews, coastguard and others scoured the area between the pier and Brighton Marina and found him in the surf about 45 minutes later.
Sussex Police said: “The man was pulled from the water and efforts were made to revive him but he was later pronounced dead at the scene.
“The man is believed to be a 22-year-old from Redhill, Surrey. The coroner has been informed.”
