A Brighton photographer has been named this year’s landscape photographer of the year for a series of pictures of the melting Lewis Glacier on Mount Kenya.
Simon Norfolk beat off 87,000 entries to the Sony World Photography Awards to win the prestigious title with his When I Am Laid In Earth series.
Mr Norfolk said: “As Photography with a capital P seems to be happy to decline into purposeless picture-making and Photoshop gimmicks, it’s great to see that Sony are still rewarding real documentary photography with a focus on an issue as important as climate change. I hope that continues.”
The series used a pyrograph to document the melting away of the glacier.
The photographer was presented his award and the latest Sony digital imaging equipment at a gala ceremony held in London attended by industry leaders.
So why is this any more purposeful ? Using pyrotechnics to illustrate something a scientist with time lapse photography could illustrate and inform more effectively avoiding the pretentious ex photojournalist trying to make a pseudo statement of art- which incidently has been done before, shame on Sony for choosing flavour of the month rather than something truly original.
