A camp set up on Brighton’s Old Steine to raise awareness of homelessness and give rough sleepers a safe area has dispersed.
The camp was started by Occupy Democracy Brighton following Wednesday’s March Against Homelessness.
Demonstrators put up tents, and climbed the Victoria fountain to put banners up too.
But after eviction notices were issued by Brighton and Hove City Council on Friday, the camp upped sticks on Saturday.
A police spokeswoman said: “A dozen tents appeared in the Old Steine Gardens, Brighton, following the Brighton March for the Homeless last Wednesday (15 April).
“The aim of the camp was to give rough sleepers a community where they felt safe, according to the site co-ordinator.
“Police were aware of the camp but it has now moved on.”
Perhaps there wasn’t enough support from the greens as this sort of thing isn’t a vote winner just before the elections.
The camp was still there throughout last night. They moved along the old steine slightly as far as the Victoria statue. So when then police say they moved the camp on they literally mean by 200 yards.
