The hosts of Southern Water’s world-famous Sewer Tours are giving parts of Brighton’s Victorian sewers a fresh lick of white paint.
Stuart Slark and his fellow tour guides will spend the next few weeks refreshing the main areas of the sewers ready for this year’s tours, which start in May.
For more than 50 years, the tours have given visitors a glimpse underground at the Victorian infrastructure which is still in use today. Last year, 1,600 people delved beneath the city streets with Stuart and his crew.
Stuart said: “For most people a spring clean means vacuuming behind the wardrobe – for us it means finding ways of making a working sewer as pleasant as it can be.“We give the sewers a refresh every year for our visitors. The pipes themselves remain unpainted as they form part of the working infrastructure but the whole route is jet-washed before every tour.
“We’re proud of our sewers and are looking forward to this year’s tours so we can show more people the hidden wonders under the city.”
