The Green candidate in Brighton Kemptown Davy Jones and Jenny Jones, the party’s only member of the House of Lords, are joining forces today (Thursday 19 February).
The pair are planning the Great Green Walk from Peacehaven to the Palace Pier, in Brighton, taking in the whole length of the constituency.
Mr Jones and Baroness Jones of Moulsecoomb are due to set off from the car park beside Barclays bank, in South Coast Road, Peacehaven, on the corner of Roderick Avenue, at 11.15am.
They aim to reach the Palace Pier at about 4.15pm, with stops along the way at seafront cafés in Saltdean, Rottingdean and Ovingdean – at 12.15pm, 1pm and 2pm.
They have also planned stops at Brighton Marina at 2.30pm and Kemp Town village at 3.30pm.
Their arrival at the Palace Pier is scheduled for 4.15pm but the organisers warned that the timings were approximate.
A party spokesman said that they were celebrating the surge in Green membership. The numbers have more than doubled in the past month,
Mr Jones said: “I stand up for fairness – an end to so-called ‘austerity’ which punishes the poor for the faults of the bankers – and for the future – protecting our precious environment from the vested interests of big business so that everyone can enjoy its resources sustainably.
“Brighton Kemptown is a treasure of a constituency with such diverse people and geography.
“But we must fight to protect our Deans, our cliffs, our shops, our more vulnerable residents, our children’s future here.”
Baroness Jones said: “Brighton is a very special place. It’s always been more compassionate and radical than London.
“Its people have already shown they can stand up and be counted.
“Voting Green, for Kemptown’s Davy Jones and Caroline Lucas in neighbouring Pavilion, is standing up for what matters to us all – and our children.”

I would rather vote for a bottle of cheap, stinking, cooking-oil from Lidls than vote for the incapable and incompetent Marxist Green Party
Watch they done stray too close to the cliff-edge !
So once again absolutely no real mention about the environment – so why do they call themselves ‘green’?
Instead it is all about attacking ‘big business’ and a return to the spend, spend, spend solutions that caused the financial problems we inherited from previous governments.
Could it just be the call themselves ‘green’ because they are irresponsible, immature and naïve?
I’m surprised Caroline Lucas didn’t join in as well – possibly with their hero Russell Brand in tow.
I’m so pleased that the green party membership has doubled – unfortunately parliamentary seats are won by the number of votes cast.
Dear Gerald,
Did you not read this bit: “But we must fight to protect our Deans, our cliffs…” etc ?
I have spent a considerable amount of time supporting local environmental campaigns in the Deans, as local residents will confirm. And by the way, the world economic crisis was caused by the bankers (as even the Governor of the Bank of England at the time acknowledged) not by over-spending on public services.
The Green Party a bunch of city wreckers. Flawed road schemes that cause more pollution & congestion.
Shockingly poor recycling figures & to cap it all the leader is to quit rather than be kicked out.
Roll on May & a new council.
What? who cares about this silly walk?
Greens need to get the heck out of our city, we’ve all had enough of this bonkers-ness to last a life time. Today I have had to tell four clients I can no longer carry out work for them as trying to get anywhere near the city centre/station area means being stuck in traffic for hours. My colleague has been stuck in town for over an hour today with three fire engines also stuck behind her with blue lights on.
I also had to get off a bus last Fri after sitting on it going nowhere for 50 minutes.
NOT ACCEPTABLE.
Greens have wrecked this town you’ll be lucky if you keep a single councillor in may.
Love from a former green voter.
PS I have a good mind to go along with a tray of eggs.
