Two Independent candidates have said that they will stand in Wish ward in the local elections next May.
Angus Gow and Mark Barnard, who both live in the ward, have started their campaign to win seats on Brighton and Hove City Council.
Mr Gow is a father of three young children who lives in Poets Corner. Mr Barnard was born and brought up in Bolsover Road, Hove, where he still lives.
Mr Gow said: “For years I’ve wondered what’s going on with our council and felt the general apathy most of us have towards local politics.
“Local residents need a voice, unhindered by party policies and national issues. All I care about is where I and my family live.
“I have never seen a councillor in my area. And it doesn’t seem to matter whether they are left or right, nothing is changing except the cracks in pavements growing more weeds and the piles of rubbish getting bigger with every strike. It’s time for a change.”
Mr Barnard said: “With the local elections looming, residents are beginning to receive leaflets from the usually silent elected representatives.
“Political parties compete with one another to take credit for the limited services in each ward.
“Wish ward is no different. A local spat has broken out between Labour and Conservative councillors to take credit for an extended residents parking scheme.
“Conversations with residents indicate that they are more concerned about their environment and quality of life than they are in party politics.
“They want to be heard and their views to count.”
Well, good luck to ’em,
but if they do get elected I’m sure they’ll soon discover the council is run by unelected unsackable GMB loons who lack little notice of councillors.
Good luck to them; they can’t do any worse than the incapable and incompetent Green council
I think the Major Political Groups in the City need a big wake up call it would be great to find another 50 candidates to stand as Independents.
Hmm, would this the same Mark Barnard who represented Central Hove a few years back as a Conservative before switching to the Lib Dems? How very independent …
We can only hope that all the main parties get a kicking at the next election. Kitcat and his munchkins have failed on every level. Theobold has stood by and watched the greens screw the city and let them. Warren is just a Gmb puppet. So yes, let’s have more party free candidates.
“All I care about is where I and my family live”. Got the City and the country’s interests at heart then!
We need councillors who believe in social solidarity rather than a ‘me-first’ attitude.
Too many people today have an exaggerated sense of their own self-entitlement rather than what they owe to the community in which they live.
Almost Clive. this Barnard man first stood in Hangleton as a Tory, did the chicken run to Central Hove as a Lib/Dem, his wife even stood in Canterbury, Kent. Each time they called themselves ‘local’, so which area do they really have ‘at heart’?
And when you think of all the things they tried to take ‘credit’ for over the years, now its the parking!
