A 62-year-old man was sitting reading in his lounge in Manor Way, Whitehawk, when he became aware of someone next to him.
A man was stood by him holding a carving style knife with a black, possibly wooden, handle and an approximately 9in smooth-edged blade.
He pointed the knife at the victim and threatened him, asking where his money was.
