A number of roads are closing for resurfacing this week and in the coming weeks, Brighton and Hove City Council said.
The work is part of a blitz on dozens of roads with a poor surface, with the latest repairs being carried out in and around the Bevendean area.
The council said: “As part of our ongoing improvement programme, parts of Bear Road, Upper Bevendean Avenue, Lower Bevendean Avenue and Heath Hill Avenue will be completely resurfaced.”
The Bear Road work started on Monday (22 July) and the work on the other roads is due to follow.
The council said: “Letters have been sent to residents in the areas affected to let them know about the work and things like diversions, parking and access arrangements.
“We’ve also installed signs in the area. We thank residents and road users for their patience while we make these improvements.
“The work is the latest in an ongoing effort to make the city’s roads better and safer.
“We’ve been carrying out a resurfacing blitz of 47 roads with a surface treatment layer of microasphalt that will extend the life of the roads
“This is on top of a major commitment to improve roads that are most in need of repair.
“Work was also completed earlier in the summer to resurface Lewes Road.”
Labour councillor Trevor Muten, the cabinet member for transport, parking and the public realm, said: “Fixing, maintaining and improving the city’s roads is one of our top priorities so I’m really pleased to see this work getting under way.
“I’ve seen first-hand in recent weeks the excellent work being done to make the roads smoother and safer. It’s something I know residents feel very strongly about.
“I’d like to thank residents for their patience and understanding while the resurfacing is being done and surface extension treatments have been completed. I’m really looking forward to seeing the finished results.”
The council added: “Any vehicles parked within the work areas will be removed from the site and relocated to an adjacent road away from the scheme.
“Residents will still have access to their properties. Buses will still be running, with some bus stop suspensions and potential delays.”
Bear Road has been closed between Lewes Road and Bevendean Road from Monday (22 July) from 7.30am each day, with work due to finish by 6pm tomorrow (Friday 26 July).
Diversions are in place, including one that allows two-way traffic in Newmarket Road.
Upper Bevendean Avenue is due to be closed on Monday 29 July and Tuesday 30 July for 24 hours a day. Temporary traffic lights will be installed to help control traffic via Lower Bevendean Avenue.
Lower Bevendean Avenue is due to be closed on Wednesday 31 July and Thursday 1 August. Temporary traffic lights will be installed to help control traffic via Upper Bevendean Avenue.
Heath Hill Avenue is due to be resurfaced between Auckland Drive and Upper Bevendean Avenue and Lower Bevendean Avenue from Friday 2 August to Friday 9 August. Temporary traffic lights will be installed and the speed limit will be reduced to 10mph.
Should not be spending money on this they should be filling the potholes.
That’s the point of resurfacing a road – it fills in the pot holes. Bear Road was like driving over the surface of the moon.
I didn’t realise they’re surfacing the roads but going round all the potholes. Very short sighted.
Ok so maybe drive down bear road and see for yourself, all the pot holes and year and years of Hodge podge repairs have been removed and we now have an incredibly smooth road.
Hats of to the guys finishing a day early as well
Anyone know what the deal is with Bedford street? They resurfaced it but haven’t seemed to replace the double yellows. It’s carnage trying to get through there now due to all the parked cars.
They’ve been doing a horrible job of this down in Kemptown and not repainting the double yellow lines, in some streets, causing chaos.
They finished the Bear Road re-surfacing by Thursday dinner time by not bothering to actually resurface 25% of the width of the road. This section (adjacent to the houses) has been left potholed and scared and is in a worst state than when they started. You’d think for being charged £165 a year to park they’d at least have provided a decent surface to park on. It also makes it more of a trip hazard for pedestrians trying to cross from north to south.
In places the resurfacing seems to have effectively created more potholes where the manhole covers haven’t been raised to the level of the new surface.
That’s because the road will bed in and sink down over 6 months so by doing it your way, you’d have a bunch of man hole covers sticking out for years to come…
Sink down?
Absolute rubbish
Spending money on the kingsway scheme ,should never have started considering the dire state of the road network across the county.IT could have been delayed, but it seems that the new regime at the town hall are intent on catastrophic decisions??? To make a point that there in charge? New totally unnecessary cycle lanes, instead of public toilets,,PAVEMENTS need urgent attention, before the winter sets in ,there in a disgusting state,we all know, that this county has a grudge against cardrivers hence the up coming debate on congestion charges ,but again it will be the motorists who get stung.Currently where have the funds gone that were raised to begin RESTORATION WORKS for Brightons Madeira arches. The worst thing this county/ now city ,did was do away with it being a CORPORATION it maintained, the roads ,pavement, and the arches, and railings along the the seafront.
All comes from government funding that is ring fenced cant be spent on providing council services
The council call it resurfacing, but that isn’t what they do. They just put another crust of tarmac on the top.
This not only doesn’t adhere to the tarmac beneath and breaks up, but it increasingly raises the road surface height, causing increased flooding at the kerbs and eventually making the pavements lower than the road surface, sending water into houses and causing flooded homes.
I don’t know if the morons at the council are just ignorant and incompetent and being easily duped by the contractors, or whether they are cutting corners intentionally, but I do know that spending money this way more often and incorrectly is not actually fixing the roads.
This country really has lost the plot. There are people at the council awarding contracts that are not fit for purpose and wasting taxpayer’s money. I think all council staff should be put out to graze and a better method of administration of local needs found. At the very least, the people at the council administering these contracts need to be sacked.
B&H city council staff are incompetent, they ignore the real problems the city and residents face, we need a total overhaul and replacement of these egoistic, self serving employees
