A charging point is set to be moved after being repeatedly blocked by bins.
The parking bay in College Place is meant to be used by electric cars accessing the charging point on the pavement – but since it was first installed several months ago, it has been filled by big black bins.
But after months spent trying to clear it, only for the bins to return, Brighton and Hove City Council is now giving up and moving the charger instead.
The chair of the council’s Transport and Sustainability Committee, Councillor Trevor Muten, said: “We’re really sorry about the issue with our electric vehicle charger by the Co-op in College Place.
“We have listened to residents’ concerns, reviewed options and now will be relocating the charger to another site before the end of January.
“We are working as fast as we can to keep up with increasing demand across the city for electric vehicle chargers. This helps decarbonise our city transport and improve air quality for residents.
“We will be installing around 2,000 more lamp post chargers throughout the city over the next few years.”
Perhaps if the council discussed plans with residents, and relevant councillors, before implementing them.
Will they be consulting about the locations of the additional 2000 chargers?
Would be interesting to know how well the lamp post charging points are being used, how many have been installed already, how much they have reduced carbon emissions in the city?
Two charging points have been installed on my street. The houses are all semi detached with driveways or car ports, which is exactly where those with electric vehicles choose to charge them. In the six months since their installation, I am yet to see the charging points in use.
Fortunately the street is a quiet one, so the loss of two parking spaces is of little consequence. However, it does appear to be a poorly considered istallation, and a blatant waste of resources. Hopefully BHCC will see the poor usage stats and move them elsewhere, but it all seems like such a waste of money.
Subjectivity aside, you’re also missing the point that having it available allows a more reasonable consideration of purchasing an electric car in the future by someone in the area.
Yet more taxation without representation or consultation by this council.
There is a lamp post charger outside my house very close to the Coop in Kemptown. I would estimate it is in use 80% of the time.
Planning at its finest, moronic council
On the grand scheme of things the number of electric charging points in brighton is good. Bound to get the odd rouge spot.
Stan the Strawman. Happy New Year.
I don’t suppose the bins, cycle rack or comms cabinet are recent additions to the street so why put a charging point in between them all? It’s hard enough to get at from the pavement let alone to plug a vehicle in.
And the cost of the poor planning to the ratepayer is….?
What? Isn’t it the council and city clean who decide where these bins are placed? So they’ve only themselves to blame for the placing of this charging point nobody else. Take responsibility for your own rules.
I think you touched upon a point I have encountered in the council a few times, that is a lack of interdepartmental conversation at times. Has caused a few hiccups in my experience.
