The Hobgoblin will reopen as a live music venue in mid-June after being given a £650,000 facelift, its new landlords have pledged.
Brighton’s Indigo Pub Company has teamed up with Punch Taverns to take on the troubled pub, which closed temporarily last year.
Its former landlord Pubs n Bars, which leased the York Place venue from Punch Taverns, went into administration in December 2009.
Punch is spending £500,000 and Indigo £150,000 to bring it up to date.
This will include a large landscaped beer garden in the car park next door, and a new kitchen.
Indigo Pub Company has also just reopened another city pub, the Prince George in Trafalgar Street as a vegetarian and real ale pub.
It also reopened the Star and Sailor in Western Road as the Temple Bar last autumn, and the company says it is hoping to open more pubs in Brighton.
Director Jon Wilson told the Morning Advertiser further expansion in Brighton was on the cards: “It’s a good time to expand, and we are in a strong position to take advantage of any good sites that come on the market.
“We’re looking for quality sites, both leasehold and freehold.”
Another pub operated by Pubs n Bars which also closed last December, the Dyke Tavern, is being renovated by TV entrepreneur Martin Webb.
Mr Webb’s company Bar and Kitchen, based at the Royal Sovereign Pub in Preston Street, has just been granted permission to extend and alter the Dyke Tavern’s kitchen.
