The owner of a neglected property in a Brighton conservation area has been ordered to carry out repairs and repainting work.
Nick White, who owns 3 St George’s Place in Brighton, has been served with an enforcement notice by the planning team at Brighton and Hove City Council.
Mr White has been given six months to carry out the work to the mid-terrace property which is in the East Cliff Conservation Area.
He must
- Wash down and repaint the southern face of the property
- Repair and make good all the windows and woodwork on the southern face
- Repaint all the external timberwork including window frames and soffits on the southern side
The property is in the middle of a parade of shops with flats above.
A council report said that residents were concerned about the property which, although not dangerous, had deteriorated due to years of neglect.
Attempts to encourage the owner to repair the property voluntarily had been unsuccessful.
Councillor Phelim Mac Cafferty, chairman of the council’s planning committee, said: “It’s always a shame when we have to resort to legal action to encourage property owners to act responsibly and maintain their buildings.
“The carrying out of repairs and repainting of this property will help to enhance the character and appearance of the East Cliff Conservation Area.”
He added that the council was also taking action against the owners of other properties along St George’s Road.
The properties include some in the parade of shops which are in a similar state of disrepair.
Councillor Mac Cafferty said: “We hope this cumulative action being taken by the council in this area will help to significantly enhance the character and appearance of the conservation area.”
