A yacht had to be rescued by Brighton Lifeboat after its mast came crashing down on the final leg of a race.
The lifeboat’s crew witnessed the mast on the 8m yacht come down while returning to Brighton Marina after completing a planned training exercise at about 12.15pm on Sunday.
It turned around and went out to the yacht to help after informing Solent Coastguard. The four-strong crew all appeared well although one had suffered a small cut from a sharp fragment of rigging.
The lifeboat crew assisted in recovering the mast, rigging and sails from the water and having made everything as safe as possible secured a tow.
The yacht was returned to a pontoon north of the lifeboat station in Brighton Marina where the yacht was de-rigged and returned to her berth.
