Labour picks new health board chair

Councillor Faiza Baghoth

Labour has chosen a councillor with a background in medicine to chair the council’s Health and Wellbeing Board.

Brighton and Hove City Council said: “Councillor Faiza Baghoth has been confirmed as the new chair of the Health and Wellbeing Board.

“The councillor, who represents the Hangleton and Knoll ward, was appointed this week after the former chair, Councillor Bruno De Oliveira, stepped down.”

Councillor Baghoth said: “Health and wellbeing is an important part of all our lives and providing residents with the best possible support and services is a vital part of the council’s work.

“I am looking forward to chairing the Health and Wellbeing Board and becoming part of the fantastic network of organisations working in this area here in Brighton and Hove.

“We will continue to strengthen the council’s collaboration with stakeholders and deliver work which really benefits our residents.”

The council is required by law to have a Health and Wellbeing Board to bring together political, clinical, professional and community leaders from the health and care sector. Members include NHS commissioners.

The board is charged with improving the health and wellbeing of the local community and reducing health inequalities, for example, by working to improve planning service delivery and outcomes.

The Labour leader of the council Bella Sankey said: “I am absolutely delighted to confirm Councillor Baghoth will now be chairing our Health and Wellbeing Board.

“Councillor Baghoth has a medical background and brings a wealth of experience and community insight to the role which I know will be hugely beneficial to both the board and local residents.”

The next meeting of the Health and Wellbeing Board is due to start at 4pm on Tuesday 8 April at Hove Town Hall.

When is the by-election? We need a better quality of councillor than the dogmatic and blind Labour put out there

By-election hasn’t been announced yet. Quality and political party have no correlation, so I hope you make a choice based on something I little more substantial then that…

Bruno stepped down from the Labour Party, not from being a ward councillor (he is now an independent), so there won’t be a by election in this ward.

I am curious what they mean by a ‘background in medicine’. Her LinkedIn profile is somewhat vague…Is she qualified? Where did she qualify? Is this a real profile? is the council lying to us again? Can our journalists investigate? Apparently the current mayor has a degree in political science but he can’t string a sentence together?! It matters because if they are make these qualifications we are being lied to and it is fraud.

She’s chairing a commitee not making clinical decisions.

Your grammar is so bad here, I can’t actually work out what you are trying to say. Could you give that another go, please?

My grammar is awful, but it hasn’t stopped our mayor so I might join the Liebour Party.

Does it matter if English is not the Mayor’s first language? How about the fact that he has run a business feeding many people for years in our city and has put together some brilliant community events over the years too. I know which matters to me more !

It is up to the tax officer to look into his dealings, he has nothing to hide with his free meals to many people, does it get counted as elections spending? Does a former MP benefits a lot from a free curry? The hygiene at the door has visited his place in months! He doesn’t run a charity love. Get real.

I agree with Sunshine, I find how they act before they were elected provides a valuable insight into who they are as a person. For Sue to come out and say…well, I don’t really know what she is trying to say, in the kindest possible way, just comes across as a conspiracist.

Not on either the GMC or NMC registers.

Some people earn their qualifications abroad. Most have to undertake further study or work before they can practise here. Or the original qualifications could be in, say biomedical research, but not involve doctoring or nursing. There are quite a few possibilities other than the deceit implied here.
I grant you the CV inflation of some of the party’s leading members has dented public confidence.

She may not be actively working in the field; in which case, she wouldn’t be on the registers.

Would still be nice to know what the supposed qualifications are. Just for clarity’s sake 😊

          Medicine. First sentence, sir.

It just says “a background in medicine” which could mean working in a pharmacy or a hospital.

No, sir. You’re thinking of Pharmacology as someone with a professional background in pharmacy. Medicine is very clearly defined.
