Former Brighton MP back in the fold as party drops complaint

Peacehaven MP welcomes constituency name change

Lloyd Russell-Moyle

The former Labour MP for Brighton Kemptown, Lloyd Russell-Moyle, has had his party membership restored after an investigation which started shortly before the general election last year.

The investigation followed a complaint and the party suspended Mr Russell-Moyle which meant hat he was unable to defend his seat at the election.

Today (Thursday 16 January), he said: “I am pleased to announce that, in the final weeks of December, I received a letter from the Labour Party informing me that the complaint against me, which I said at the time was ‘vexatious, politically motivated and designed to disrupt the election’, had been dropped and the party has no remaining case against me.

“My membership of the party has been restored.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported me and my team in 2024 following a very difficult year, in which I was undemocratically removed as the local MP and they lost their jobs.

“This complaint has had a deep and lasting impact on me and my health but, with this ordeal now over, I am looking forward to putting this year behind me with my reputation restored and my head held high.

“Local Labour members, constituents who still stop me in the street and people in the wider co-operative, Labour and trade union movement stood by me from day one.

“This support helped me get through this stronger and more resilient than ever.

“At the start of 2024, I was looking forward to becoming a Labour/Co-op MP in a Labour government.

“I had been selected to introduce a bill on banning conversion therapy and I genuinely felt that my work was beginning to help shape the potential Labour government’s stance on housing, energy and climate issues, as well as scrutinising the Cabinet Office and constitutional matters.

“We were making steady progress. I am disappointed not to have been able to continue this important work.

“In 2015, we had just five Labour councillors in the constituency. By the time of the 2024 election, we had 21 Labour councillors and only two independents.

“My brand of politics had won people over from all sides because I cared and worked with people of all backgrounds.

“I loved spending time in my local area, visiting local schools, meeting community groups and residents’ associations.

“I was not afraid to speak out when I saw injustice and always put my community before personal position or party.

“We saved libraries, fixed roads and changed policies that people raised with me when they were wrongly implemented – I used my time in Parliament to improve the lives of people who live in my home town.

“As I am no longer an MP, I need paid employment and I have to consider my future. I am now actively looking for new ways to contribute to society, exploring new careers that are fulfilling, do good and reflect the values that I espoused while I was your MP.

“I want to say thank you to all those who helped me get through this horrid year. Those who supported me and stayed loyal to me – it meant a lot. I will always remember your support.

“I’ve been warned about commenting on disciplinary processes and therefore I do not intend to say more on this topic at this time.

“Please stay in touch on Facebook (fb.com/lloydrussellmoyle) Instagram (lloydrussellmoyle1), Twitter/X (lloyd_rm) or LinkedIn (linkedin.com/in/lloydrm).”

Well actually no it’s not. What a complete and utter disgrace with his childish actions in the house of commons along with his disgusting comments on safe sex. The man took more interest in his own policies for personal benefit that those of his constituents. Hope he never gets any important post again.

Such an obvious hatchet job on you Lloyd that I couldn’t vote Labour for the first time in my life (67). Hope you find peace now and good luck for the future.

Sounded like there were quite a few who felt like this. It’d be interesting to know who the complainant was. That guy should be ashamed of himself.

Extraordinary timing! This wouldn’t be a reward in return for not sharing what he knows about another former Brighton and Hove Labour MP arrested at the weekend, would it?

What a tangled web they weave.

      Conspiracy theory much?

If the police want to talk to him then he will talk to them.

Labout reinstating him as a party member has no bearing on the Caplin situation.

I have always thought the guy to be a complete buffoon and totally unsuited to be an MP.
But this affair is now beginning to have an unpleasant smell about it.

Or are they dusting him down in case an unexpected parliamentary vacancy crops up in Hove?

He’s somehow conflating that the outcome regarding the ex-MP that has allegations currently being investigated would somehow result in the incumbent to be removed, I believe.

What a mess. The whole set of escapades going on in Brighton & Hove around Labour shows how corrupt they are as a party and what little respect they have for the democratic norms that we as the electorate have a right to expect. I notice that he has been warned off commenting on disciplinary processes, which does not say much for the standards in the Labour Party that they resort to threats to protect themselves. In electing a Labour government it is rapidly looking as though we have exchanged one corrupt regime for another.

LABOUR has long divorced itself from ideology, specifically Socialism. We are now a nation of brainwashed morons who have to be approached the way the advertising industry does in order to ‘sell’ politics. Politics is now completely dominated by lobbying. The complexity of society, and the economic power that resides elsewhere renders Parliament a toothless Mickey Mouse institution full of cynical careerists and liars. Never mind, perhaps Capitalism will finally collapse when the environmental catastrophes make it impossible to profit from anything any more. Yay.

Disciplinary action is the key word here.
It does not say either way if he was or not guilty of the allegations made against him only that the COMPLAINT has been dropped. Doubt will remain in place.

I wonder if Mr. Russell-Moyle is eyeing-up the candidacy for Mayor of Sussex…..

I’m hopeful that this gerrymandering ploy by Angela Rayner will backfire in Sussex; looking at the political map prior to the GE; and we will end up with either a Tory mayor (Sir Jacob Rees-Mogg, hopefully !!), or better still Suella Braverman as Reform mayor…

Why would anyone in Sussex vote for either of them when neither has any connection to the area?

Lloyd was a fantastic MP. I am so sorry he was treated so poorly. He should be our MP now, the votes for the current one were gained on the back of Lloyd’s hard work.

I think we deserve an explanation. Our democratically elected MP was removed by unelected individuals on the eve of an election and we go carted in Chris Ward (who has yet to respond to any of my letters). Why should we trust this party ever again?

Legally, at the time this happened Parliament had been dissolved so he wasn’t an MP.

In fact there were no MPs at the time.

Oh what a surprise! A totally empty complaint solely designed as part of Red Tory Starmer’s purge of the Left of his party. Those who do not follow the exact thoughts of Dictator Starmer will feel his wrath. Frightening.
