Brighton and Hove Albion 2 Manchester United 1
A 93rd minute Joao Pedro goal keeps Albion at the top of the Premier League.as the Seagulls finished off the Red Devils at a damp Amex Stadium in what would once have been called Fergie time.
The striker’s diving header from Simon Adingra’s cross gave Albion an unassailable late lead.
Danny Welbeck scored the 100th goal of his club career to put Albion ahead against his boyhood club when he converted Kaoru Mitoma’s cross before United levelled in the second half through Amad Diallo.
Welbeck hit the bar from a corner with a header then new United signing Joshua Zirkzee had a goal disallowed for offside.
But just when it looked like a point apiece Pedro struck to deny United what would have been their first ever league draw against Albion.
The match took a while to get going until, on 31 minutes, Albion went ahead. Pedro’s ball across the penalty area had been cleared but Kaoru Mitoma made it his and sent in a low cross that found Welbeck who slid it home from close range.
Marcus Rashford thought he’d equalised from the restart, beating Jason Steele from close range with a remarkable flick after Albion’s keeper made a superb save from Rashford’s header, but he was offside.
Albion could have doubled their lead in the 51st minute. Pedro found James Milner and he got ahead of Maguire to prod the ball only for Dalot to clear the veteran’s effort off the line.
Instead of doubling their lead, Albion were back level just on the hour.
Amar cut inside Jack Hinshelwood on the right and his shot went in off the knee of Jan Paul van Hecke.
Then Zirkzee inadvertently touched fellow sub Garnacho’s shot, which was going in anyway, sending it over the line from an offside position and VAR ruled it out.
In stoppage time, with 93 minutes on the clock, Adingra hoisted a ball over a packed United defence for Pedro to plant a diving header past Onana to keep Albion top of the Premier League.
