Cars towed after resurfacing team show up a day early

Cars towed after resurfacing team show up a day early

A street full of cars were towed when a council resurfacing team showed up a day before residents were expecting them.

Brighton and Hove City Council put notices up towards the end of June saying that Margaret Street in Kemptown would be resurfaced on Wednesday last week.

But workmen actually turned up on Tuesday – to find most cars had not been moved.

The council said the signs had been put up to advertise the change of date, which happened because of poor weather forecast on the Wednesday.

But residents said the date was changed on the day itself.

One, Zoe Hubbard, said: “They turned up a day early in Margaret Street changed the date on the sign that had been there for a couple of weeks and proceeded to pick up and moved every car that was parked down there… absolutely shocking.”

Another, Bibi, said: “There were genuinely shocked residents shouting out of the window ‘it’s tomorrow’. The main guy operating the truck removing them all was smirking a lot.

“The road feels very unsteady to walk on as it is a big mound in the middle.”

Councillor Trevor Muten, the lead councillor for transport, said: “This resurfacing work was brought forward so it could be completed ahead of the forecast poor weather.

“Signs were put up letting people know the change in dates, no cars were illegally removed and no fines were issued.

“This type of work helps prolong the life of our roads, is widely used and is intended to bed in over several months.

“Resurfacing our roads in this way makes them safer and benefits the entire community so it is important where parking is temporarily suspended residents do move their cars to allow this work to take place.”

Yet the headline states that cars were towed. Does that mean they were legally removed, even though the signs were put up on the day the work started? Another council blunder?

The grammar is quite clear. The only cars that were towed were ones that were illegally parked on the street. A notice was given to residents that this work was to happen on a Tuesday instead of a Wednesday. Allegedly, according to a resident, the updated sign was placed with short notice, a day before, although this is unverifiable.

are the cars moved back into the street by the same tow trucks or by different tow trucks?

If it is anything like the “resurfacing” of some roads in west Saltdean it will be a waste of money. All they did was a thin skim of tarmac called redressing, and it has already started to break up. I am staggered thay anyone from BHC council thinks this is a good job. It is certainly not value for money. Ok it looks nice and freshly black, but look closer and its very poorly done.

more about being seen doing something about the pothole crisis than actually solving the problem.

And now it’s a hazard and nightmare to drive up as there’s no yellow lines there’s cars parked all the way along, today theres a van literally parked as you enter the road coming from the sea end, meaning it’s very dangerous to enter the road, the road surface itself is awful, rough and lumpy…frankly it’s a joke.

Boomers get cars moved around the corner so they get Thier road fixed ahead of schedule and still have to winge about it. Better vote the greens back in so we don’t have any more road fixing again

Hahaha, you’d be surprised how often spelling things out to people is required. I can understand where that line comes from.
