Council pledges to spend £4m on smoother roads this year

Councillor Jacob Taylor and Councillor Trevor Muten in High Street, Brighton, where the road is being resurfaced

Road resurfacing work in Lewes Road is a sign of things to come, according to two senior Labour councillors as they pledge to spend £4 million this year alone on smoother journeys.

They said that Brighton and Hove City Council was making a “major commitment to making our roads better” after listening to voters’ gripes about potholes.

The council said that it was “undertaking a major programme of road resurfacing to repair a number of key roads across the city”.

Councillor Trevor Muten, the cabinet member for transport, parking and public realm, said: “We know that residents desperately want better and safer roads across the city and we’re pleased to be rolling out this major programme to improve things.

“Potholes are a significant pain for bus users, cyclists and motorists – and this council is mobilising to do everything we can to get them fixed.”

In the past few weeks, a large section of Lewes Road as well as High Street in Kemp Town have been given a smooth new surface, with work scheduled for Norfolk Square next week.

The council added: “Over the next few months, we’ll also be resurfacing parts of Wharf Road, Bear Road, roads in Bevendean and a large section of the A259.”

The deputy leader of the council, Jacob Taylor, is also the cabinet member for finance and city regeneration.

He said: “The money we receive from the government to maintain and repair our roads has fallen in real terms year on year, making it much harder for us to keep up with demand.”

The road is being resurfaced in High Street, Brighton, with more work to follow around the area

Councillor Taylor added: “With so many of the city’s roads in need of improvement, we are committed to making road repairs a priority.

“We are spending a combined total of £4.3 million on reconstructing and improving our roads this year.”

Funnily enough only the section of Lewes Road damaged by all the construction work involved in building the new student ghetto was actually re-surfaced. The rest of Lewes Road and the badly pot-holed surrounding roads have been left untouched…

Are you really from Bear Road? None of this was outside the new Student accommodation towers. The resurfacing is Natal Road to Selsfield Road. So mainly past University lecture halls, Bevendean and Moulsecoomb.

The student construction section is due to be relayed at their cost at some point in the future. Should tie in neatly with this new council section.

If you’d bothered to read my post correctly you would have noticed that I said that the road was damaged by all the construction work involved – all the massive lorries involved had to get to the building site; they didn’t miraculously appear on site and the council didn’t bother with resurfacing any of the road further north than the university site.
Secondly look at a map or take a walk – the entire western section of Lewes road from Natal Road to The Avenue consists entirely of University of Brighton buildings…Exactly where the resurfacing finished.
Oh and I’ve lived here for fifty years – You?

Only 35 years here… the point is that road has been damaged by all the traffic being in one lane. It is not just the student construction. Even in the years before building work started that road always gets huge potholes due to the way the road is over used. Too much traffic in a single lane.

A large part of the problem caused by the way the central reserve got shrunk moving the drains into the main running lane.

There is no negative here. The council have replaced part of the worst section of the road, and the next stretch is due to be done at some point by the Preston Barracks works. This should not be about blaming the university for finding somewhere to house their students to get them out of the HMOs we are forced to live with in our streets.

It’s a good start; there’s a lot of ground to cover. Pun intended.

Let’s hope someone co-ordinates the work with the utility providers so a newly resurfaced section isn’t dug up the following week.

Well it’s pointless really. RJ Dance are busy wrecking the freshly sorted out western road. Their repair has already sunk lol

What about last year’s underspend of £6milioon for roads, can that be spent as well?

It wasn’t an underspend of £6 million. The £6 million potholes budget for 2022-23 was underspent. The underspend was carried forward and, the council said, has since been spent.

Not actually the correct spelling of lanes. That spelling is an invention of Brighton and not even historic.

Don’t forget the weeds and emptying gullies. Most gullies are totally full of dirt and are now pointless. This will lead to flooding.
